Andy Roddick Loses Five Set Thiller In Davis Cup

Down 1-2 in a best of five matches Davis Cup semifinal, The United States lost Sunday to Russia as
Andy Roddick of the USA was
beaten by Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 17-15. After four hours and 48 minutes on the slow clay, Andy Roddick lost
his serve to drop the match in one of five breaks against his serve for the day.
Roddick was scheduled to face Mikhail Youzhny in a rematch of their US Open semifinal, but Russian captain Shamil Tarpischev
elected to play Tursunov. Roddick had 22 aces to 29 from Tursunov. Total points won were 212 and 200 to Tursunov and Roddick
respectively.
James Blake of the United States is scheduled to face Marat Safin of Russia in the meaningless fifth match. One or both players
will most likely sit out due to the semifinal result has already been decided.
Friday on day one of Davis Cup semifinal play Safin defeated Roddick 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7-5) and Youzhny beat Blake 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5
to give Russia a 2-0 lead. On day two in doubles; however, the American team of Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Dmitry Tursunov
and Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
In semifinal number two, Argentina defeated Australia 3-0 to reach the Davis Cup final for only the second time. In the Davis Cup
final December 1st through December 3rd, Russia takes on Argentina in Moscow, Russia.
